When is Ramadan 2010 USA

First day of Ramadan will be Wednesday, August 11, 2010

and Eid ul-Fitr on Friday, September 10, 2010, insha’Allah.

“O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed
to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint.” Qur’an 2:183

The Fiqh Council of North America has announced that the first day of Ramadan in the USA will be on August 11, 2010, Wednesday.

The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) and the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) recognize astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’ia method for determining the beginning of lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. The FCNA & ECFR use Makkah al-Mukarramah as a conventional point, and take the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and the moon must set after sunset in Makkah.

On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eid ul-Fitr for the year 1431 AH are established as follows:

* 1st of Ramadan will be on Wednesday, August 11, 2010
* 1st of Shawwal, which marks the start of Eid ul-Fitr, will be on Friday, September 10, 2010.

Ramadan 1431 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on August 10, 2010 (Tuesday) at 11:08 am Makkah Time. Sunset in Makkah on August 10 is at 6:55 pm. On that day, the Topocentric Altitude of the moon in Makkah at sunset is 1.6 degrees. Therefore, the first day of Ramadan is on August 11, 2010 (Wednesday), making the first Tarawih prayer to be on the night of Tuesday August 10, 2010.

Eid ul-Fitr 1431 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on September 8, 2010 (Wednesday) at 6:30 pm Makkah Time. Sunset in Makkah on September 8 is at 6:31 pm. On that day, the moon in Makkah at sunset is below the horizon. Therefore, the first day of Shawwal, which marks the start of Eid ul-Fitr is on Friday, September 10, 2010, insha'Allah.

May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path, and accept our fasting and prayers. Ameen. For more detailed information, please visit: www.fiqhcouncil.org or www.moonsighting.com

Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi

When Does Ramadan Begin in 2010?

When Does Ramadan Begin in 2010?

Every ninth month of the Islamic calendar (lunar calendar), Muslims around the world fast (no food and water) from dawn to dusk for one month. Each day, Muslims will break their fast at sundown with special prayers at mosques. This practice serves to remind them to empathize with those less fortunate than themselves.

The Islamic months in the Islamic calendar are named as follows:

Muharram محرّم (or Muharram al Ḥaram)
Safar صفر (or Ṣafar al Muzaffar)
Rabi' al-awwal (Rabī' I) ربيع الأول
Rabi' al-thani (or Rabī' al Thānī, or Rabī' al-Akhir) (Rabī' II) ربيع الآخر أو ربيع الثاني
Jumada al-awwal (Jumādā I) جمادى الاول
Jumada al-thani (or Jumādā al-akhir) (Jumādā II) جمادى الآخر أو جمادى الثاني
Rajab رجب (or Rajab al Murajab)
Sha'aban شعبان (or Sha'abān al Moazam)
Ramadan رمضان (or Ramzān, long form: Ramaḍān al Mubarak)
Shawwal شوّال (or Shawwal al Mukarram)
Dhu al-Qi'dah ذو القعدة
Dhu al-Hijjah ذو الحجة

Of all the months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the most venerated. Muslims are required to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during the daylight hours of this month.

Ramadan 2009 Announcement in Mecca (Makkah) Saudi Arabia

It has been announced that Muslims in Saudi Arabia will begin the holy month of Ramadan on Saturday, August 22, 2009. Most of the Arab countries and Iran will also follow suit and start their fasting on the same day.

This will apply to countries of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, the Palestinian territories, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

Because Islam follows a lunar calendar, Ramadan begins each year about 11 days earlier; its start is traditionally determined by the appearance of the new moon.

After the crescent was failed to be spotted on Thursday night, the first possible sighting, it was expected on Friday, with fasting to begin at daybreak on Saturday.

Muslims in Libya, as well Shiite Muslims in Lebanon, who had determined the lunar month according to astronomical calculations, had begun their fasting on Friday, August 21, 2009.

When is Ramadan 2009 in United States?

It has been announced by the Fiqh Council of North America that the start of the holy month of Ramadan 2009 will be on August 22, 2009.

Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar.

This difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Ramadan may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.

Please refer to the announcement by the Fiqh Council of North America below:

RAMADAN & SHAWWAL 1430 (2009)

First day of Ramadan will be Saturday, August 22, 2009 and Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, September 20, 2009, inshaAllah.

"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint." Qur’an 2: 183

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar’i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarram as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.

On the basis of this method the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1430 AH are established as follows:

1st of Ramadan will be on Saturday, August 22, 2009
1st of Shawwal will be on Sunday, September 20, 2009

Ramadan 1430 AH:
The astronomical New Moon is on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:01 Universal Time (1:01 pm Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on August 20 is at 6:47 pm local time, while moonset at Makkah is at 6:46 pm local time (1 minute before sunset). Therefore the following day Friday, August 21, 2009 is not the 1st day of Ramadan. First day of Ramadan is Saturday, August 22, insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Friday night.

Eid ul-Fitr 1430 AH:
The astronomical New Moon is on Friday, September 18, 2009, at 18:44 Universal Time (9:44 pm Makkah time). On Saturday, September 19, 2009, sunset at Makkah is 6:20 pm local time, while moonset is at 6:36 pm local time. Therefore, first day of Shawwal, i.e., Eid ul-Fitr is Sunday, September 20, insha'Allah.

May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path, and accept our fasting and prayers. Ameen. For more detailed information, please visit: www.fiqhcouncil.org or www.moonsighting.com

When Does Ramadan 2009 Begins in Singapore?

Dear Singaporean Readers,

It has been announced by the Singapore Mufti that Ramadan 2009 (1429H) will begin in Singapore on August 22, 2009 on Saturday.

Ramadan Mubarak and Ramadan Kareem to all Muslims.

The message from the President of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore is below:

The President,
Council Members & Staff of
The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore
Wishes All

A Blessed Ramadan 2008/1429H

Praises be to Allah, the Most Merciful and the Most Forgiving
Greetings of peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)

Let us together express our thankfulness to Allah for we are here to welcome the glorious month of Ramadan again, and for the opportunity to worship in this month full of blessings.

In performing our fast, the thought of how weak and hungry we are would often permeate our minds. But fasting is not merely abstaining from food and drink during the day. This is because the act of fasting not only tests our physical endurance, it also trains us in the patience needed in battling our desires, encourages sympathy for the disadvantaged, and distances ourselves from unprofitable activities.

Fasting empowers the Muslim community so that we remain resilient in the face of challenges. This is in accordance with the Prophetic saying that “fasting is a shield.”

Let us make this Ramadan a month for penitence, and for us to treasure its excellence. Let us seize this opportunity, together with our families and friends, to experience God’s grace and mercy, in order for us to be a spiritually strong and modern Singapore Muslim community.

May Allah bless all our worship and devotion this Ramadan, Amin.

Please find below the Ramadan Schedule for 2009 in Singapore. It shows the time (imsak) when you have to stop eating and drinking, and the prayer times, including the time for breaking your fast.
